I TOUCHED AN ELEPHANT AND WATCHED A RHINO PEE

I have over a thousand pictures to sort through from my very first safari, but until then, let me leave you with three amazing things that happened today: I touched an elephant, watched a rhino pee and witnessed a kiss that proves opposites do indeed attract. What a great day! More to come.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TOMORROW?

I have the day to myself tomorrow to explore Ontario while The Boyfriend learns about pensions and… sorry, I drifted off there for a second. One option is to go to this African Lion Safari in Hamilton. I’m bringing my telephoto lens and plan on going shutter crazy.

African Lion Safari

Who doesn’t love giraffes making out with their car?

But then I stumbled upon this -The CN Tower Edge Walk. For $175, I can walk around the CN Tower in Toronto, 1,167 feet above the ground. It looks incredible and freakishly scary (Note: I’m a bit of a wuss). Watch this youtube video. It is insane.

A RANT ABOUT TORONTO

Toronto is a huge city. We’re not talking about Hicksville, Canada. We’re talking about a big, thriving, busy metropolis with lots of tall buildings and tourists. So one would be safe to assume you could rent a car in downtown Toronto even at, say, 9:00 p.m., right?

WRONG. You know what they say about assuming… You make an… well you know how it goes.

The Boyfriend and I are supposed to fly into Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) tonight via Porter Airlines. It’s a small airport only a five-minute ferry ride away from downtown Toronto. According to my perfectly hatched plan, The Boyfriend is supposed to pick up the car when he arrives at 9 p.m. and we’ll be ready to head for Waterloo when I get in an hour later. I had assumed we would have no trouble renting a car in downtown Toronto. There I go assuming again…

I plugged our details into Expedia to see what availability and prices looked like.

Car Rental in Toronto

I plug in our details…

I was shocked when this came back:

Car Rental in Toronto

What???

Then I started looking up individual car rental companies, thinking maybe there’s something wrong with Expedia. Hertz: Closes at 6 p.m. Avis: Closes at 8:30 p.m. Budget: Closes at 5:30 p.m. Alamo, Enterprise,  National — all closed.

Holy Complications Batman, I can’t find a car rental place open later than 8:30 p.m. in downtown Toronto. Am I missing something? Any frequent Toronto travelers who know the secret to finding a rental car near YTZ airport? Anyone else who had the same experience and want to chime in on how ridiculous this is?

UPDATE: The Boyfriend is now flying into Pearson International Airport in Toronto, will pick up a car and pick me up at Billy Bishop Airport. Will let you know how it all goes…

I’M GOING ON A TRIP, NAH, NAH, NAH, NAH

Okay, so it’s not a huge trip, but it’s still a trip. And that counts for something.

The Amazing Boyfriend is going to Waterloo, Ontario for a conference and I’m going with him! Did I mention he is Amazing?

We will mostly be hanging out in Waterloo, relaxing (me) and learning about pensions (him), but on Sunday we will visit Niagara Falls and do all the obligatory touristy things people tend to do at Niagara Falls. I haven’t been to Niagara in over 10 years (it might be 15 by now…. it’s so hard to keep track), and The Boyfriend has never been.

Plus, I brought my camera into the shop to be cleaned so hopefully, hopefully I will be able to take dot-free pictures.

Our trip: We are flying into Toronto via Porter Airlines, which is a pretty neat experience because you land on an island and take a boat to the mainland. I flew Porter once, about three years ago, so it will interesting to see how it’s changed. We’re off to Waterloo from there, then Niagara Falls, and then we will fly out of Buffalo.

P.S. How funny is Will Ferrell as a jumping elf? I can’t stop cracking up.
